In-Home Maternity - My new favourite thing

I have been shooting in-home maternity sessions for a while now and I always enjoy working with expectant mamas and families. However recently,  I have found a whole new level of love for this type of session. Before writing this post, I tried to unpick exactly what it is about pregnancy photography that makes it so special, and it turns out it's not just one thing, but three.

1) Mum-to-be

Nine months, well actually nearly ten (they forget to mention that bit) of carrying and growing awesome little lives, honestly it's remarkable when we come to think of it. For each and every one of us, those 9 months of pregnancy are their own journey of ups and downs. Yet, one thing is for certain, it's hard work, and man, mums do a great job! It is this, that encompasses a lot of my purpose in shooting maternity images. Showing the strength and beauty of pregnant women, the amazing glow in a mum, who is just weeks away from meeting that baby. Capturing the amazing way her body has changed to grow and protect her little bundle. As the third-trimester rolls to the finish, I know it can be hard to feel that 'glow', but in the hands of the right photographer your beauty, confidence, and all-around awesomeness will shine through, captured and remembered always,

2) The love in the waiting for baby

Now, I guess that subtitle is a little hard to comprehend, but it's there in every maternity session. The love may be coupled with excitement, anxiety, and nerves - but always love. The way a partner looks at that bump and the incredible woman carrying it. Their hand, as they reach to feel the wriggle and roll of an elbow, knee or foot. That smile as they help you to do something, you didn't need help with a few months ago. Yet, it's not just between partners, but also in the little eyes of siblings, waiting eagerly to become that big brother or sister. I am always taken by the power of the love in the waiting and how it shines so brightly through in a session.

3) The Pregnancy details and that bump

Oh bumps! There is something so incredibly awesome about a baby bump. Although a maternity photography session is about so much more, it's nice to take some time to focus on the details of that gorgeous bump. Yet rarely do I get just the bump, but in fact something so much more. Hands. Mum's hands, dad's hands, little sibling hands - they are all drawn to the little bundle waiting. Whether it's dad waiting for that reassuring kick or mum tickling a little pushy foot, these are the details that form your days waiting for your little one to arrive, these are the details that should be captured forever. Details that bring you back to that moment.

So I've listed three reasons why I love maternity photography, but really, the list is endless! And, with each new mum-to-be, I am even more humbled to have to opportunity to capture their special journey.

At home with two adorable sisters ~ An in home family session filled with fun {Family Photography in Oxfordshire}

There is nothing I love more than photographing a family at home in their own space, especially when the family is made up of two very adorable sisters. I met Jackie, James and their girls at their home in Oxfordshire, for their family session. Right from the beginning, I knew this family was going to be a ton of fun the shoot.

With the littlest napping, we had a little time with big sister. Together with her mummy and daddy, the 3 of them gave a dramatic retelling of The Bear Hunt, sound effect and all (honestly, I had to try super hard to steady my camera, as they were just so awesome to watch - genuine fits of laughter!) Big sister clearly loved goofing around with mummy and daddy. When the time came to wake up the little one, I followed mum to the nursery to capture those sweet sleepy moments post nap. Waking with a smile for her mummy, baby A giggled and cooed as mum lifted her from the cot. Both girls were so adorable to capture, so similar yet wonderfully different in their own ways. Thank you S family for letting me capture a little of your family life. Here are a few highlights from out time together.

Portraits full of laughter ~ a gorgeous family of four {Family Photographer Reading

Gone are the days of stiffly posed family portraits and thank goodness - I love portrait sessions like this one, full of laughter and energy. This gorgeous family of four were such much fun to shoot, so much energy and joy - I left on a total high!

I met Jenn and Steve at the very beautiful Holies, Streatley, for their outdoor family photography session. The chilly autumn weather was against us a little, with dark clouds looming, but it didn't dampen the fun. With two littles exposed to the elements, it was time to get moving; it was time for some forest adventures.

Mum and Dad searched high and low with L and A to find the biggest leaf and the longest stick. The leaves were soon discarded, but the simple stick soon transformed into a sword for a knight and then a wondrous staff for a king. Steve, energetically took on the role of the mischievous forest King, which allowed me to capture those gorgeously genuine smiles, meant only for daddy. With the King safely captured and the chill setting in, in was soon time for Jenn to scoop up her two little for cuddles under the blanket.

I could have snapped this family moment all day long, they were just great to capture. From the comical tangle of legs trying to clamber onto mum at the same time, to the shared jokes sending each, and at times all, into fits of laughter. Perfect.  Thank you Rodwell family for letting me hang out and capture your family life. Here are some of my favourites from our time together.

Sweet baby girl ~ darling little sister {Reading Newborn Photographer}

I completely fell in love with this sweet, little girl and her darling sister. Last month, I got to meet the T family for a special newborn session at their home in Purley on Thames. It was wonderful to work with this adorable family again - I had a great time meeting the parents and big sister for their family session 2 years ago. Now, with a new addition to their family, they really are just too perfect.

We started our session in baby S' nursery, cute sleepy moments and snuggles from mummy and daddy. I love the shot of big sister, photo bombing the moment! Then it was time for some adorable family cuddles and laughter with both girls.  After a feed, for the little lady, it was time for me to capture some individual newborn photos. Baby S was a dreamy, sleepy girl. she slept the entire time – not a single peep! And I even caught a smile from her too.🙂 It was an morning full of joy . Congrats T family!! Here are several favourites from our time together – Enjoy!

Siblings - A perfect trio!! ~ Reading Family Photography

Earlier this month I had the pleasure of working with this perfect trio and their parents. I met the family at their home in Farley Hill for a family session. We worked our way around their gorgeous property and surrounds, as the children darted in and out of secret hiding places and cosy dens - seriously, this darling bunch were a photographer's dream. Such fun!! Here are a few of the favourites from the day.
